Why Doesn't Emotional Healing Follow a Straight Line?

You may have thought you were doing better.
The memories weren't as painful.
You weren't thinking about it every day.
You felt like you were finally moving forward.
Then something small happened.
A song.
A place.
A conversation.
Suddenly, the emotions returned, and you wondered if you'd lost all the progress you'd made.
You haven't.
Emotional healing rarely follows a straight line.
It moves in seasons.
There are days when you feel lighter, and days when old hurts seem unexpectedly close again.
That doesn't mean you're back where you started.
It means you're human.
Healing isn't measured by never feeling pain again.
It's measured by how you respond when the pain returns.
Maybe this time you speak to yourself with more kindness.
Maybe you reach out for support instead of isolating yourself.
Maybe you allow yourself to feel sadness without believing you'll stay there forever.
Those are signs of healing, too.
You don't have to rush yourself toward "getting over it."
Some experiences change us.
Healing isn't about pretending they never happened.
It's about allowing those experiences to become part of your story without letting them define your future.
Little by little, healing creates room for hope, joy, and peace to return.
Not because the past disappeared.
But because you no longer have to carry it in the same way.
This Week's Intention
This week, I choose to be patient with my healing.
I will remind myself that healing isn't measured by the absence of pain. It's measured by the compassion I offer myself and by my ability to move through difficult moments without losing hope.
