I Stand With Jane Doe

There are moments when a name becomes more than a name.

“Jane Doe” is often used when a woman’s identity needs to remain private. It can represent someone whose name we don't know, someone who has chosen not to have her identity made public, or someone who deserves the protection that anonymity can provide.

But there is something else the words Jane Doe can represent.

Any one of us.

You Don't Have to Know Her Name to Stand With Her

When someone chooses anonymity, that choice deserves to be respected.

We don't need to know her name, see her face, or know every detail of her story to recognize that she is a person deserving of dignity, privacy, and safety.

And supporting someone doesn't require knowing everything about them.

Sometimes support is simply saying:

I believe you deserve to be safe.

I believe your privacy matters.

I believe you deserve dignity.

And you should not have to stand alone.

That's what I hear in the words I Stand With Jane Doe.

Her Safety Matters

Women should not have to choose between speaking about what happened to them and protecting themselves from what might happen next.

Privacy can be part of safety.

Anonymity can be part of safety.

And having other people stand beside you can matter, too.

The responsibility for keeping someone safe should never belong entirely to the person who has already been harmed. Yet women are so often expected to think about what they share, where they go, who might know their name, what someone might find about them, and how their choices could affect what happens next.

That's exhausting.

Every woman deserves to move through the world without having to constantly calculate how much of herself it is safe to reveal.

Standing Together

“I Stand With Jane Doe” isn't about pretending that everyone has the same experience.

It's about recognizing something much simpler:

No woman should have to stand alone simply because she needs to protect her identity.

Standing together can be quiet.

It can be a conversation with a friend.

It can be refusing to participate when someone's private information is being shared.

It can be respecting someone's decision not to be identified.

It can be reminding another woman that she doesn't have to explain every part of her story before she deserves compassion.

And sometimes, it can be as simple as wearing the words where other people can see them.

Why I Made This Shirt

I wanted the shirt to be simple.

No complicated graphic. No long explanation.

Just:

I STAND WITH JANE DOE.

Because the words themselves are the message.

I also wanted the phrase to mean more than support for one individual. Jane Doe can represent the woman whose name we don't know, the woman who doesn't want her name known, and the woman who should never have to sacrifice her privacy in order to be heard.

Most of all, it represents the idea that her safety matters.

If you want to make that statement visible, I created the I Stand With Jane Doe shirt as part of the Strength Of shop.

I stand with Jane Doe.
