When You Don't Want to Dress Up: Let Yourself Be a Little Bit Sarcastic

Halloween can be fun. But it can also feel like one more thing you're supposed to do.

Find a costume. Make plans. Go somewhere. Be social. Be festive.

And sometimes you just don't want to.

Sometimes you'd rather put on a comfortable shirt, stay home, hand out candy, or go about your evening without pretending to be anyone other than yourself.

There's something oddly freeing about admitting that.

You Don't Have to Perform the Holiday

There can be pressure around holidays to participate in a certain way.

You're supposed to be excited. You're supposed to dress up. You're supposed to have plans.

But you don't have to.

You can enjoy Halloween without wearing a costume. You can enjoy it quietly. You can decorate your house, watch something creepy, eat too much candy, or simply appreciate the fact that October gives everyone permission to be a little strange.

And if your idea of a costume is putting on a sarcastic T-shirt?

Honestly, that's valid too.

Sometimes Humor Is How We Give Ourselves Permission

Sarcasm isn't always about being negative.

Sometimes it's a way of acknowledging something about ourselves without taking it too seriously.

Maybe you're the person who overthinks everything.

Maybe you have very little patience for unnecessary small talk.

Maybe your face communicates exactly what you're thinking before you've had a chance to say it.

Maybe you're perfectly comfortable admitting that you don't want to dress up.

Humor can give us a little distance from the things we might otherwise take too seriously.

It can also be a reminder that you don't have to make yourself more palatable for everyone else.

You Can Be Serious About Yourself Without Taking Yourself So Seriously

There's a difference between self-awareness and self-criticism.

Being able to laugh at yourself doesn't mean you don't value yourself.

Sometimes it means the opposite.

You know who you are. You know your quirks. You know your limits.

And you don't need to apologize for every one of them.

So if Halloween rolls around and you don't feel like becoming somebody else for the evening, don't.

Put on something you like.

Stay home if that's what you want.

Go out if you want to.

Wear the costume.

Don't wear the costume.

Or put on a shirt that makes the point for you.

You get to decide how you show up.

And sometimes, a little sarcasm is just another way of saying:

I'm comfortable being myself.
